The Chronicles of Nadia

As a student intern and the newest member of the Criterion family, I certainly have much to learn. From sussing out the scanner/copier machine, to attempting to memorise the specific tea orders, working 9 – 5 for the first time is a huge change to the casual student lifestyle I had become accustomed to.

I made the transition from student experiences of living on campus and casually rolling out of bed 10 minutes before a lecture at 11, to moving away from the security of university life to a new and exciting town, where careful planning of the duvet to office route is essential in order to arrive by 9 each day. It was certainly a change which had to happen sooner or later, and what better way to make the student to employee switch than through an internship?

An internship, or professional training placement, happens to be a part of my degree programme.  After scouring the web, filling in many an application form and sending my CV far and wide, I finally found something that really appealed to me and I applied for the intern position with Criterion. I made it through the online psychometrics and was relieved to hear that I’d done well enough to be invited to the assessment day.  During the assessment day, more psychometrics but this time pencil and paper version, as well as an interview and an interesting task where I had to be the one to generate psychometric questions. My initial thoughts; ‘So you’re testing me by making me make tests?’ Correct.

I was pleasantly surprised to get a call days later where I heard I’d made it! Woohoo! I was no longer a typical student lay-about; I had a proper job to look forward to. While I’m certain that my internship with Criterion Partnership will provide an amazing opportunity for experience and personal development, having little prior experience of office jobs I was nervous to be starting my first day in the world of work.

As an undergraduate intern, I had little (no) experience of ‘real’ work, office etiquette, addressing superiors, acceptable office attire, and more importantly I didn’t really know what Criterion actually did on a day-to-day basis. But luckily for me the whole point of being an intern is that you don’t have to know everything and that’s okay, because you’re here to learn.

So far after my first week on the job, everyone here at Criterion has been extremely welcoming and patient with my inexperience. I’m quickly discovering the ins and outs of psychometrics and training courses, as well as the general office goings on. Needless to say, I’ve enjoyed my time so far and I’ve promised to be back again next week!
