And cancel Christmas...
26/11/2008, Author: Alan Redman

I don't know which is more depressing, articles like this one at the Guardian or this one at HR Zone.
I agree with the psychologist in the Guardian piece that cancelling the Xmas bash could well be counter productive in performance terms but I think the bigger issue is the gradual extinguishing of any joy within the modern workplace.
Which is why I find the HR Zone piece even more dispiriting. By offering a list of Christmas party groundrules and do's & don'ts the article seems to capture the essentially po-faced (I'm trying REALLY hard not to use 'scrooge-like' because it's tired) and Spartan attitudes of someone who you feel deep-down secretly disapproves for people having any form of good time at work. Or anywhere.
So, my advice for employers and employees this Christmas. Have a party. Like it's your last one. And ignore the HR Zone guidelines as a general principle, especially anything that is an obstacle to happiness & joy.
Happy Christmas everyone.

Here here, setting such tight ground rules for Christmas parties will surely either only lead to rebellion or cause people not to turn up at all.
