The Appointment magazine: Computer says "yes"

22/09/2006

Alan Redman, Director with Criterion Partnership, writes in this month's edition of The Appointment magazine about the evolution of internet based testing.

On current practice

"Internet testing is daily becoming the norm for certain groups like graduates, who may even be deterred from applying to a major employer whose application process does not include modern, online assessment techniques".

On traditional testing methods

"While online psychometrics can bring benefits there remain many testing scenarios when paper and pencil remains the most appropriate in terms of cost and candidate friendliness. Recruitment processes for more senior or niche roles where the assessment must be more specialised still lend themselves to more traditional testing methods".

On the future of online testing

"Devices such as mobile phones, PDAs and even handheld game consoles can now access the internet wirelessly. Perhaps future generations of test takers will expect to be able to complete questionnaires on the move via their handheld wireless devices. That will present major challenges for psychometric test design but offer great gains in flexibility for employers and their applicants".
