Numerical reasoning tests - a noddy's guide
Numerical aptitude tests are psychometric instruments that measure at 3 levels of difficulty
- Numerical ability - can the candidate understand basic numerical information and perform simple calculations? For example a blue-collar test.
- Numerical reasoning ability - can the candidate understand numerical data and perform calculations such as averages and percentages? For example a mid-level test.
- Numerical critical reasoning ability - can the candidate arrive at answers from numerical data using complex calculations that can require multiple steps, estimation and judgement? For example a graduate/managerial test.
Candidate are presented with numerical information, such as financial results, prices, discounts, charts and graphs and are required to answer questions which require them to perform calculations. Candidates choose which answer they think is correct from a multiple choice format.
Ability tests are often used online for pre-selection purposes alongside online personality tests. Paper & pencil tests are often used alongside assessment centre exercises to determine a candidate's overall suitability.
